During the academic year 2022/23 SoundsTheatre was hosted by the research sector of Milan Conservatory to conduct a series of workshops resulting in a performance and a presentation on the results of the research.
Programme for the research based experimental ensemble “Collettivo RE-ACT”
The idea was born out of the research project conducted by me in the Warm research workshops on the subject of “sense and sensibility in systematic musical composition.” Since the project has expansive practical dimensions, and considering the diversity that the conservatorio could offer with its various departments, e.g. classical, antique music, electronic music, traditional music etc., I ideated an experimental ensemble made up of various elements in order to excavate the possibilities that may be offered through conduction (extemporaneous composition) collective semi-improvisation, microtonal experimentations, and above all, reconstruction of pre-existing compositions that would allow a research-based elaboration of elements within the context of contemporary experimental music (with the example of pieces by Lamonte Young, Alvin Luciere, etc.)
With the help of M° Gabriele Manca as research advisor, the ensemble aims to put into practice the findings of my research project in a way to create a repertoire to be presented in a unique way to the audience and students of the conservatory. This could in turn create a space for the students of conservatory to benefit from an alternative musical experience being immersed into the state-of-the-art artistic experimentations, interdisciplinary activities, and transcultural outlook towards a plurality of modes of musical expression. All these efforts are aimed at arriving at a new means of expression that may be called a SoundsTheatre.
The programme contains of numerous encounters where the attendants would be informed of the key concepts and practice different instances thereof. Each session is at the same time a conference, a rehearsal, and a performance. The attendees are invited to bring their instruments, and feel free to participate in the actual activities of the ensemble. Each session contains 14 hours of various work that is held during the month indicated.
